How Long Can a Fish Live Out of Water

Depending on the species, the duration of a fish’s life span can vary from minutes to years.

Some fish are adapted to live in saltwater and can survive out of water for hours while others have evolved to live in low oxygen conditions and are able to survive months on land.

The longest fish that can live outside of the water is the mangrove rivulus.

In fact, the mangrove rivulus can remain active for weeks or months without eating or drinking.

This is a very impressive feat.

There are many other fish species that can survive out of water for a long time. Some can survive in small puddles or in muddy swamps.

They can even live in areas where water is partially salty, which is called brackish water.

The average goldfish can live outside of a tank for up to an hour. However, some species such as neon tetras can only survive for about three to four minutes.

One fish that does well out of water is the Walking Catfish.

They have a special organ in their mouth that helps them to breathe in oxygen directly.

Their pectoral fins also allow them to move about on land.

The catfish is a good example of a fish that has adapted to living in a variety of environments.

Other examples include the mangrove killifish, which can survive months out of the water while still being able to absorb oxygen through its skin.

They also have gills that can help them survive in low-oxygen conditions.

These fish can also store oxygen in their skin, which means they can use them again when they return to the water.

There are also mudskippers, which can survive in muddy places for hours.

Although fish can live out of water for hours, they will soon start to show signs of exhaustion and will eventually succumb to the effects of suffocation.
